Equal parts security and humanity.
Located in the picturesque Resurrection Bay community of Seward, this 320-inmate facility had to be designed in a way that addressed three major issues.
First, it needed to be a good neighbor — a structure that would not overwhelm the community. Second, it needed to respond to its magnificent natural setting. Third, it needed to clearly express a high level of security to inmates and neighbors alike.
Our design strategy sought to meet these needs by breaking the facility up into individual elements, evoking a college campus or summer camp. The design utilized sloped roofs, playful forms and bright colors while making security elements highly visible, providing local residents with peace of mind.
