Girdwood K-8 School Renewal

Girdwood, Alaska

A re-imagined school infused with the great outdoors.

Built in the 1980’s utilizing a ‘sea ranch’ style of architecture, the existing building was ill-suited for the heavy snows and rains of this northern rainforest located at the base of Alaska’s premier ski resort.

MCG’s renewal completely reworks the roof systems solving long standing drainage problems and adds a vital two-story expansion housing middle school students, a gym, and a dynamically reimagined commons/library complex. The exterior design respects the thematic design features of resort-style architecture while it adapts the existing structure to a new 21st Century learning setting.
