Chugach Optional School

Anchorage, Alaska

An open plan learning environment that works.

Evolving from the open school concepts of the 1970s, Chugach Optional remained true to the spirit of the movement, keeping its focus on parent involvement, learning by doing, and curriculum integration, all within a highly democratic organization.

The old double-hall design was transformed to a single, central “learning street” with transitional spaces buffering the open-concept classrooms. The new library embraced flexibility with spaces such as window seats, providing for a variety of simultaneous uses from individual studies to a whole class gathering.
