This revitalization project will participate in the International Living Future Institute’s Living Building Challenge, which requires that projects meet a series of performance standards to show the building operates as cleanly, beautifully, and efficiently as nature does.

In joining the Living Building Challenge, RurAL CAP seeks to minimize the facility’s impact on the surrounding environment while bringing comfort and amenities to guests.

How do you help people understand the scope of the universe and Earth’s place in our solar system? That was the question pondered by amateur astronomer and high school student Eli Menaker, who proposed a walking tour of the solar system, scaled to fit the sidewalks and trails of Anchorage.

Starting at the sun designed by MCG, a 12-foot half dome clad in handmade ceramic tile, in the heart of downtown Anchorage, the walk continued along the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail.

The sun’s vibrant yellow tile and the surrounding off-street open space, punctuated by electronic information screens, served as a public gathering space and iconic landmark at the center downtown.

With this in mind, MCG was tasked to develop a learning signature and graphic identity that establishes the school as a strong academic environment, while also communicating what life is like in Port Alsworth.

In collaboration with both school and community, we developed the phrase, “Academic Excellence, Strength of Character, Achievement in Life” to capture the character of Tanalian. The final logo design successfully incorporates both language and imagery, featuring a classic shield shape, scholarly serif type, and the unmistakable sites of Port Alsworth: water, airplanes, and Tanalian Mountain.

Conceptualized to represent the library as a “lifeline” within the community, the design was also to convey a distinct, modern aesthetic, representative of the innovative new facility to be built. In the versatile final design, a circular icon is cross-cut by a “lifeline” of books, while the angular typeface used in the mark accentuates the contemporary look.

Our staff collaborated with prominent Alaskan artist Alvin Amason to create a dynamic concept for UAA’s Native Arts Program. Inspired by the traditional native boat and long house construction combined with the cultural importance of whales, the new instructional workshop was a dynamic intervention bringing the power of the Alaskan landscape and culture together in a structure that was wholly contemporary, yet responsive to the history and values of students, faculty, and community.

The central space was a collaborative learning environment that combined learning-by-doing with traditional instruction methods. Flooded with natural light year round, the Arts Center was designed to give this important program a new presence and identity on campus.
